Introduction

  • I regard blogging plans and activity as a key to an open form of e-Research. As a researcher I enhance research and collaboration opportunities by letting others know about my research plans and activity as it happens, I encourage other researchers to do the same.
  • Good blogging is an art and developing the skills and data structures to do this efficiently requires practice. Setting up and keeping up my blogging activity has sometimes felt like a burden, but ultimately it has been rewarding and I believe the benefits of doing this and having the reference material far outweigh the costs of getting it in place and maintaining it.
  • It is perhaps surprising how much people can be forgot without clues to help them recall (and even with these). Keeping a blog has helped me understand this, but has also I think improved my memory recall and potential to recount events.
  • Essentially all I need to develop this blog is a communication device (computer, internet connection and browser) and for the external link: NCeSS Sakai Portal to be working.
  • There is a way to blog and collaborate in near enough real time in meetings with meeting participants and with the public at large. This way we can got a lot more from a room full of people than when we go about a more traditional approach of taking it in turns to speak. As well, with groups in the same room much can be done with new information and communication technology to make more out of group activity.
  • I have another blog hosted on The University of Leeds, School of Geography Web Server. This, external link: My School of Geography Blog, is much harder for me to use when I am not at my works PC.
  • Some might argue that neither of these so called blogs fulfill their expectations of a blog. They are not open to post or leave comments. To do that, you need your own blog :-)
  • The URL of the public view of this page is:
  • In 2009-04 I started using a micro-blogging service called identi.ca which is based on an open source and open standards software tool called Laconica.
  • I am considering what to use and develop as my work information system.
